For the Love of Big Ben

Whether you call it Westminster, St. Stephen's Clock Tower or The Clock Tower, it's all Big Ben to my son Westen. His love of this building in particular was what led us to London.

Westen has never been a big watcher of movies or TV, but a couple years ago, he started playing a video game called Kingdom Hearts. The stars of this game are all characters from Disney. For the first time he was introduced to Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty, Alice from Wonderland and a boy named Peter, flying past a clock tower saying, "the second star to the right and straight on 'til morning".

All of the sudden, drawings of Big Ben began to appear all over my house. If you look behind Westen's door, you will discover a miniature version taped to his wall, but that was not enough for him. Finally I gave in to his requests to install a larger version in our family room using our wall clock as the face. For over a year now, we have had our own Big Ben looming over us as we watch TV.

When it came time to make plans for our Europe trip, I knew it had to include a visit to the real clock tower. Here, my two boys (Westen is the blond) wait for it to strike twelve. His elation was worth all the miles from Phoenix to London!
