My Magic Book ~ Free Crochet Pattern ~ Muk Luks

I became completely unraveled for about an hour today when my magic book went missing. OK, so the book isn't really magic, but it is where the magic happens. This colorful and rather tattered book is where I put all of my ideas. This is my pattern book.

It's filled with illegible scribbles and funny diagrams that only I can decipher. If found 500 years from now, the crocheters of the future would no doubt rub their noggins and wonder about the ancient ones.

I actually haven't written in my book for a while. I have found myself teaching, dyeing, transcribing and all sorts of things that have kept me from my personal designing. Today, however, I needed to find it so that I can take one of the scribbles and turn it into a proper pattern for you.

On December 6, 2009 I wrote a blog post called My Muk Luks and Me. In it, I offered to write up my Crocheted Muk Luk Pattern and give it away if enough people were interested. A few people have expressed interest and I'm not a pattern tease, so I've decided to get to work!

I haven't made my muk luks in a while, so my plan is to make them together with you in a crochet-along. I'll take us step by step through the construction of the slipper boots and when we're finished, I'll post the complete pattern. So, you can make them with me or wait for the finished pattern to be posted on this blog.

The green and natural boot is actually what I call my Mini Muks. I think it is what more people will find practical, but once you have made the short boot, making a taller version like this one (brown/turquoise) isn't hard. I actually like the tall muk luks because they are closer to the knitted version that inspired me in the first place.

So tell your friends and your Ravelry groups! There's a new, free crochet pattern coming your way! It may seem like a strange time of year to make essentially a slipper sock, but since it's formed from squares, it's easy to work on even if you are on the go. You can make the pieces while your on vacation and assemble them later. When fall and the holiday season come around, these are very fun gifts. One of my readers mentioned that she'd like to make some for seniors in a local home for the aged. What a nice idea!

I'm going to start reviewing my notes. In the meantime, if you want to start gathering materials. You'll need two medium weight yarns (about a 4). I like to pick one solid and one variegated. You are going to want to pick a yarn that can take a little wear and tear since it's going to become muk luks. We'll also be working with a size K crochet hook.

See you soon!
